It’s not uncommon for a puppy to chase its tail now and again, but repetitive behaviors such as tail-chasing or licking should not consume a large portion of your dog’s time. Valerie Tynes is an Animal Behaviorist from Fort Worth, Texas.
She says, “they’re probably the one behavior problem most likely to be related to pain or neuropathy or even just mild itchiness. And possibly, when it’s not a true underlying medical cause like that, there’s a good chance there’s probably some underlying neurophysiological dysfunction in these animals.”
If it’s hard to interrupt your dog’s tail-chasing, ask your veterinarian to examine him. If no underlying injury or allergies can be found, Tyne says anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed.
