It’s not unusual for a dog to break a tooth chewing on a hard bone or toy. Geriane Holzman, a Certified Veterinary Technician at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine, says the important thing to remember is that a fractured tooth is likely very painful, so it needs to be taken care of right away.

The sooner you can get your dog to a veterinarian, the more likely it is that his tooth can be saved with a root canal or other procedure. If the tooth is beyond repair, your veterinarian will likely remove it. But don’t worry if buster ends up with a hole in his smile.

Holzman says, “dogs and cats can get along fine without all of their teeth.”

After all, your dog probably prefers comfort and well-being over vanity.
