A puppy’s first meeting with your older dog, Fido, should be on neutral territory, such as a nearby park. Ask a friend or relative to help. With both animals on a leash, let them greet each other with a quick sniff, then take them for a short walk together. Nothing works to create a bond like walking as a pack.
Back at home, give the two animals time to get to know each other while you play “cop on the beat.” Don’t let old Fido threaten the puppy, but don’t allow the newcomer to pester him, either. Take control, establish firm ground rules, and you’ll gain their trust and respect.
However, if the first meeting is tense and contentious, and you’re not sure how to play a leadership role, consult a veterinary behaviorist!
