When you leave town, you place a lot of responsibility in the hands of a pet sitter. After all, you’re trusting that person to care for your precious pet. So help the sitter do a good job by preparing your home.

Start by carefully inspecting your house. Make sure that cleaning supplies and other potential toxins are locked up. Put poisonous plants out of reach. Lock outdoor gates, and turn on any outside lights.

In addition to leaving emergency contact information and detailed feeding and exercise instructions, tell your pet sitter about any unusual circumstances. For example, a door that doesn’t shut or a sink that doesn’t drain.

These small preparations will help ensure the well-being of your pet, and will ease your mind while you’re away.
