What is the best way to hold a new puppy?

For an insecure young puppy, being picked up by a human is a scary—even formative—experience. So let’s try to do this right. Yes, I know mother used her teeth, but you’re no puppy’s mother. Luckily, you have hands.
Slip one hand under the puppy’s chest and tummy. Scoop the little guy up and cradle him on your arm, against your chest. Use your other hand to support the front legs—which may be trembling. Remember, puppy has never been this far off the ground before.
This is a real bonding moment in a new creature’s life. You can feel his tiny heart beat. He can hear yours, too. Keep that hand underneath for support when you gently return the puppy to the mother. Don’t be surprised if he scampers back to you.
